Persian carpets get a modern makeover

The ancient art of weaving handmade wool Persian carpets in Iran is getting a modern makeover.

Persian carpet makers have been weaving rugs since 500 BC. They are now facing two major challenges – changing consumer tastes and increased competition from Indian and Chinese carpet weavers. To compete in the world handmade carpet market, Iranian carpet weavers are updating their designs. Ahad Azimzadeh, a Persian carpet exporter said:

"The patterns of Iranian carpets are ancient but today there is a strong demand for contemporary styles. They're more suitable for a modern house".

Persian carpets are expensive and, in the past, have been seen as more of an investment than a decorative floor covering. This is changing, with most buyers now wanting a carpet in a more modern style to match the decor of their home. The carpet is no longer a status symbol, it is a beautiful and practical floor covering.

Persian carpets often feature bright colours, but there is also a style known as “transitional carpets” which are once bright-coloured carpets that have been left outside in the sun so that the colours fade. These carpets appeal to those who like more subtle colour schemes.

Few residents have handmade carpets in Chester homes. This is mainly because they are expensive and not recommended for high footfall areas. There are a wide range of quality carpets available from local carpet retailers. For those who love the traditional floral intricate patterns of Persian carpets, premium quality wool carpets with similar patterns are available.
